The itinerary

Tampa is on Florida's west coast and a haven for arts and culture lovers, from ancient works of art to a museum dedicated to the craft of photographic art, there's something for everyone in this city. If art isn't your thing, head over to the Florida Aquarium to appreciate over 20,000 species of aquatic plants and wildlife. Tampa is just a 90 minute drive to Orlando and its incredible theme parks – perfect for a pre- or post- cruise holiday extension! Cruise ships dock in Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal, in the heart of downtown Tampa.

Day 2At sea

Day 3At sea

San Juan is the vibrant and historic capital of Puerto Rico, and for cruise passengers, one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean. From ancient fortresses to colourful colonial-era buildings, stunning beaches to legendary nightlife, there's so much to explore in this city, which is the gateway to the Southern Caribbean for many cruise lines. The colourful buildings and charming boulevards of Old San Juan are a must visit, with ancient forts, beautiful churches, cathedrals, fountains and statues around every corner. Beach lovers are spoilt for choice with the magnificent Condado Beach just a stones throw away from the city centre and the resort-filled Isla Verde with excellent watersport activities available, superb restaurants and exotic white sand beaches.

The island of St Maarten, at just 37 square miles, is the smallest island in the world split between two nations – the Dutch and the French. Philipsburg, the capital of Dutch St. Maarten, is where cruise ships dock on the island. The capital stretches about a mile (1½ km) along an isthmus between Great Bay and the Salt Pond and has five parallel streets. Most of the village's dozens of shops and restaurants are on Front Street, narrow and cobblestone, closest to Great Bay. Wathey Square is in the heart of the village. Directly across from the square are the town hall and the courthouse, in a striking white building with cupola. The structure was built in 1793 and has served as the commander's home, a fire station, a jail, and a post office. The streets surrounding the square are lined with hotels, duty-free shops, restaurants, and cafés. The Captain Hodge Pier, just off the square, is a good spot to view Great Bay and the beach that stretches alongside.

Mountainous St. Kitts, the first English settlement in the Leeward Islands, crams some stunning scenery into its 65 square miles (168 square km). The fertile, lush island has some fascinating natural and historical attractions: a rain forest replete with waterfalls, thick vines, and secret trails; a central mountain range dominated by the 3,792-foot Mt. Liamuiga, whose crater has long been dormant; and Brimstone Hill, known in the 18th century as the Gibraltar of the West Indies. Cruises to Basseterre will dock in Port Zante in the heart of the city. English with a strong West Indian lilt is spoken here. People are friendly but shy; always ask before you take photographs. Also, be sure to wear wraps or shorts over beach attire when you're in public places.

Charlotte Amalie is on the island of St Thomas and is the capital of the US Virgin Islands. It's home to one of the most beuaitful harbours in the world and boasts countless picture perfect white sand beaches, in particular Magen's Bay was named one of the world's most beautiful beaches by National Geographic, making it a must-visit. The island is littered with colonial-era buildings and don't miss the chance to visit Blackbeard's Castle, built in 1679, to see the world's largest collection of life-sized pirate statues! Head into the mountains inland to witness a jaw-dropping panoramic of the island on a cable car rising almost 500 metres above sea level. After a busy day of sightseeing, you'll be spoilt for choice for local cuisine –  conch fritters, johnnycakes and coconut patties are all local delicacies, perfectly washed down with some a pint of Blackbeard Ale.

Puerto Plata is the oldest city in the north of the Dominican Republic and is nestled between towering mountains and the vast expanse of the ocean. The booming cruise market has led to major revitalisation works in the downtown area of the city and the lively pier, known as the Malecón. A must-do activity is riding the cable car up Monte Isabel de Torres which offers unrivalled panoramic views 792 metres above sea level, alternatively enjoy a guided tour of Charcos de Damajagua to hike through lush forests and beautiful flora before reaching a range of 27 waterfalls and canyons to slide and jump into the turqoise waters below. For something a little more relaxing, why not head to Sosua Beach to take in the stunning transparent waters.
